The Alpine Coaster

Park City Mountain Resort’s Alpine Coaster is the stuff of every thrill seeker’s dream.  Reminiscent of Olympic bobsled tracks, the Alpine Coaster is an elevated track which whisks riders along well over a mile of track which loops through the beautifully mountainous Park City scenery at a heart-racing clip of 30 mph.

The Alpine Coaster twists and turns around bends and hairpin curves at speeds controlled by the rider.  With breaks on each of the coaster’s cars, the rider can go as terrifyingly fast or as slow as they are comfortable with.  Having control of the breaks means that the Alpine Coaster is perfect for all ages, though children under 54 inches tall, must be accompanied by an adult or responsible person over 54 inches in height.

Alpine Coaster Pricing

Scheduled to open for summer on the 23rd of May, adult tickets to ride the Alpine Coaster can be purchased for $20 per ride during the regular season or for $22 per ride during the holiday season.  For passengers less than 54 inches tall but over the age of three who are accompanied by an adult, the cost is $7 per ride during the regular season and $8 per ride during the holiday season.

Park City Mountain resort also offers Alpine Coaster and Alpine Sliden combo passes.  For adult riders, or persons over 54 inches in height, a combo pass can be purchased for $26 during the regular season and $28 during the holiday season.  For riders taller than 42 inches by less than 54 inches in height, and over he age of three, combo passes can be purchased for $10 during the regular season, and $11 during the holiday season.  Each combo pass entitles riders to one ride on each the Alpine Coaster, and the Alpine Slide.

Ice Skating

Bobsledding

Looking for the ultimate thrill? Try racing 80 miles an hour down a iced track with twists and turns at Utah Olympic Park. Bobsled is limited to those 16 years and older.

Snow tubing

This fun Gorgoza Park activity requires no training and is suitable for the whole family, just hop on an inflatable tube and hang on! Seven different lanes are available for all skill levels and there’s a separate tubing hill for the younger ones. Lifts also carry you back to the top so you can do it all over again and the lanes are separated by lights so you can keep racing as the sun goes down.

The museum also has an education component for children that teaches them more about Utah’s colourful history and the snow cycle.

The George Eccles 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum: Also located at Utah Olympic Park is this collection dedicated to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, which were hosted in the area. This state of the art museum features exhibits dedicated to each of the sports at the Olympic Winter Games including cross country skiing, curling, alpine skiing and more. They even have a stunning collection of Olympic medals on display as well.

Summit Country Courthouse Museum: Situated just a few miles away, this museum is located in the basement of a historic early 1900s courthouse. During your visit, you will discover a collection of antiques and memorabilia from the area’s Wild West days.

Our Park City Lodge Shares Some Information about the History of the Sundance Film Festival

Actor Robert Redford worked with a group of friends in 1978 to set up a festival to attract more film makers to Utah, to celebrate local and national film and to create an environment for the discovery of new movies. The first festival was a small affair, but featured classic films including Deliverance, A Streetcar Named Desire and Mean Streets. Redford helped the festival to achieve large attention and Hollywood contributed a lot of resources into making the annual event a success. As a local homeowner, Redford also owns a restaurant called Zoom, located on Main Street in Park City and a nearby ski field. Famous independent filmmakers including Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh and Jim Jarmusch all received their big breaks at the Sundance Film Festival. Movies such as Saw, Super Troopers, The Blair Witch Project, Reservoir Dogs, Little Miss Sunshine, El Mariachi, Moon, Clerks, Thank You for Smoking, and Napoleon Dynamite were also premiered at the event and moved on to great success.

Thousands of people visit Park City every year for its excellent skiing, beautiful scenery and vibrant local culture. But many visitors do not know that it also has an amazing history which began after the area was settled by Mormon pioneers. Park City was home to one of the biggest silver mining camps in the country and has an interesting heritage just waiting to be discovered. The area has since become a premier skiing destination and has been home to many world class athletes as well as hosting the famous annual Sundance Film Festival.

The History of Park City Told by our Utah Ski Resort

Early Mormon pioneers traveled through Park City to establish Salt Lake City before they returned and built a toll road. The basin at the top of the canyon was good for grazing and some families settled in the area. It was known as “Parley’s Park City” at the time. Silver, gold and lead was discovered in the area and it flourished until almost becoming a ghost town when the price of silver dropped and The Great Depression arrived.

A fire almost destroyed the town in 1898 and it faced another crisis in 1902 when 34 miners were killed in an explosion. The town was in desperate need of a new industry, when some miners proposed a ski resort called Treasure Mountain which ended up saving the town. It is believed that as early as the 1920s, miners used underground trains and shafts to access the mountain for skiing.

The resort opened in 1963 on 10,000 acres of land the miners owned with mineral rights. That was essentially the beginning of America’s ski industry and since then Park City has housed more tourists than residents. It now has several million annual tourists and had a large part in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
