Dating back to 1984 under the festival’s original name, the Deer Valley Chamber Music Festival, the first Beethoven Music Festival was held in the summer and was organized by a violinist of Juilliard acclaim, Leslie Blackburn Harlow.  The featured musicians of the first  incarnation of Park City’s chamber music festival where notable musicians from the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, as well as some of Park City’s own talent.

When Russell Harlow joined the festival in 1987 as co-director, the Beethoven Festival began to evolve and included the Winter Classics Chamber Music Festival, The Summer Classics Chamber Music Festival, The Autumn Classics Chamber Music Festival, The Park City Film Music Festival, and April’s Spring Chamber Music Festival.

The 29th Spring Chamber Music Festival

As Spring arrives in Park City, so does the 29th annual Spring Chamber Music Festival put on by Park City Chamber Music Society.  This years concert series takes place on Sunday April 14th, Tuesday April 16th, Friday April 19th, and Sunday April 21st.  Tickets for this event can be purchased online.

When it comes to laughing at Park City, no-one laughs harder than we do at our selves.  That’s why every year, the Egyptian Theater Company, Park City’s resident theater company, puts on a show explicitly aimed at making light of all things Park City.  This April sees the 13th incarnation of Egyptian Theater Company’s production, Park City Follies.

Dating back to the year 2000, Egyptian Theater Company has taken it upon themselves to create a fun and hilarious look at all those who would label themselves a “Parkite”.  This years edition of Park City Follies takes place from April 5th-13th and is guaranteed to be a jovial work of hilariousness created by the Follies Creative Team.

The Egyptian Theater Company

Constructed on the site of the old Dewey Theater, a center piece of pop culture and live theater which succumbed to a roof cave-in following heavy snowfall, construction of the Egyptian Theater began in 1922, and the theater opened its doors to audiences on Christmas Eve 1926.  With the design of the Egyptian being largely inspired by the then recent discovery of King Tut’s tomb, John Rugar, the owner of the theater, brought in a renowned Egyptologist from Seattle to help create the authentic egyptian feel of the Egyptian.

The opening of the Egyptian Theater carried a great deal of significance for Park City residents as Park City had always been a hub of pop culture which thrived on live theater.  In addition to facilitating Park City’s love of live theater, the new Egyptian Theater offered theater goers the option of taking in a feature film.

Through the years, the Egyptian Theater has undergone a great deal of reconstructive facelifts to preserve the building’s structural integrity.  The residents of Park City have always been happy to give to their theater and offer support in times of trouble for this landmark venue located on Park City’s Main Street.  Thanks to Park City’s gracious fundraising efforts, the Egyptian Theater, now called the Mary G. Steiner Egyptian Theater, is still open to the public and reminds audiences of what Park City is all about.

The Festivities

Snowasis in the Snow will take place from March 25th through to the evening of March 31st with exciting events planned all week long.

The festivities begin with the cutest of meet and greets as families are invited to meet Park City Mountain Resort’s most adorable team members, their avalanche rescue dogs.  These adorable, hard working dogs, are taking a couple of hours out of their busy work day to play with attendees of Snowasis in the Snow.  Make sure your family gets a chance to meet these hard working, life saving pooches.  They’re looking forward to meeting you too!

The excitement continues on Tuesday with Park City Mountain Resort’s Kid’s Carnival and Parade.  Tuesday is guaranteed to be a day of fun for the whole family.  The Kid’s Carnival which follows the parade will include face painting and a number of fun, family oriented games.

On Wednesday, families can participate in Park City Mountain Resort’s Songs for the Slopes Karaoke party at the Karaoke Caravan.  After you’ve shown off your impressive pipes, spend the afternoon with Park City’s Cowboy Joe.  Participants in Songs for the Slopes will be given an opportunity to watch their awesome karaoke performance on the small screen with Cowboy Joe!

On Thursday, all of Snowasis in the Snow attendees are invited to join Park City Mountain Resort for Drum to the Snow Gods.  Families will be able to come to the mountain and join in with Park City Mountain Resort’s drum circle to celebrate the winter and all the fun of the snow – with drums!

Friday will be a day of excitement as all of you snowmamas and snowpapas will be invited to partake in Park City Mountain Resort’s Snowmamas and Snowpapas Meet-up.  Enjoy some of Park City’s premier skiing on this exciting ski tour.  While all the moms and dads are enjoying the slopes, kids will get to participate in a challenging scavenger hunt in Park City Mountain Resort’s Adventure Alleys.

Saturday will be more fun for all the moms and dads as Miller Lite presents the Apres Concert!

Sunday will be an all day Easter Celebration!  Kicking off the day will be Park City Mountain Resort’s mountainous Easter egg hunt.  The Easter egg hunt will be open to everyone aged six and up.  Egg hunters will get to search the entire mountain to find Park City Mountain Resort’s Golden Egg.  For attendees of Snowasis in the Snow under the age of six, there will be excitement and a lot of play in the Kid Korral!

- Sunday, February 17 brings us works of Mozart, Beethoven and more at the Temple Har Shalom for an afternoon concert beginning at 3:00pm.

- Friday, February 22 see the infamous Beethoven String Quartet as well as a variety of entertaining duets. This concert will also be held at the Park City Community Church and will begin at 7:30pm.

The Theater

Located just about a mile from your room at Park City Peaks Hotel, the Jim Santy Auditorium at the Park City Library Building is located in a historic building that used to be Park City’s High School. The Kimball Arts Festival (August 2-4):

This three day event is now in its 44^th year making it one of the oldest and largest in America. It offers a multi-sensory artistic experience including live music, art exhibitions, food tasting, art film screenings and the Park City Kimball Arts Festival Opening Night Gala and Auction. Close to 58, 000 people attend the festival and it is reasonably priced at only $10 for an adult weekend pass and $5 for children/students aged 18 to six.

Park City Wine and Food Classic (July 10-14):

Master winemakers, culinary experts and renowned entertainers gather at this premier event in Park City. More than 100 products are on display and with tastings, cooking seminars and product demonstrations there will definitely be something to whet your appetite.

Deer Valley Celebrity Ski Challenge (December 8-9):

At this free event, you can see Olympic athletes and celebrities engage in various events and activities as they raise money for the Waterkeeper Alliance. This charity is dedicated to protecting over 100,000 miles of rivers and coastlines around the world so it’s definitely for a good cause.

Sundance Film Festival: (Jan 17-27): As the world’s most famous film festival and Park City’s iconic event, Sundance provides an excellent opportunity to see amazing movies and engage in some celebrity spotting. U.S. Snowboarding & Freeskiing Grand Prix (Feb 25 – March 2):

It is the eighth annual wine and food classic and tickets sell quickly so make sure to purchase yours as early as possible.

July 14 – The Music of Michael Jackson with the Utah Symphony

The excellent Utah symphony is in its ninth season of providing classical, opera, and pop offerings in the park city area. These classically trained musicians perform over several months during the Deer Valley Music Festival and shouldn’t be missed. The music of Michael Jackson concert will be held at the Deer Valley Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheatre and is just one of the many events being held in July. All of MJ’s classic hits from albums such as Thriller will be performed.

July 26 - Sundance Institute’s Free Outdoor Film Screening Series

Bring a picnic and watch a great movie while sitting in the grass with friends at this event. The July 26 showing is Filly Brown, a drama about a Mexican girl who rises to musical fame as she copes with the incarceration of her mother.

Park City Events in June

June 1^st – 3^rd – Taking place at the Jim Santy Auditorium Slow Food Park City’s Food & Film Weekend will kick off with a showing of Julie and Julia, on Friday at 8pm followed by Big Night on Saturday at the same time and Chocolat on Sunday at 6pm. The film series is meant to draw attention to the “slow food” movement, where people are striving to preserve traditional and regional cuisine as an alternative to fast food, and encouraging the farming of plants, seeds and livestock characteristic of local ecosystems.

June 1^st – 3^rd – The Park City Film Music Festival will be taking place for the 9^th consecutive year in 2012 from June 1^st to 3^rd and will screen over 200 independent films for audiences throughout the festival. Tickets are no on sale for the screenings. In addition, the festival will also showcase: free concerts, round tables, seminars and receptions at various venues throughout the city.

June 3^rd – The 19^th Annual Park City Children’s Fair is a Park City tradition held in City Park each year and featuring activities for children of all ages including: games, food, live music, prizes, magic shows, pony rides, a bouncy house and much more. The event will run from 10:30 am until 3pm.

June 10^th – September 23^rd – Every Sunday from 10am until 5pm, Park City’s Historic Main Street will be home to the Park Silly Sunday Market, Utah’s zero waste street festival and open air market. Vendors, artisans, activities for children and adults, delicious food and performers will be present at the market and it is free and open for all to attend.

Park City Events in May – Spring is Just Around the Corner!

May 5^th – Cinco de Mayo Community Celebrations are taking place on May 5^th (of course) at The Yard in Park City. Hosted by the Holy Cross Ministries, Rowland Hall and The People’s Health Clinic, the celebrations will include food, dancing, drinks (a cash bar), live music as well as a silent auction. Admission is 15 cans of food or $15.00 for adults, and 5 cans of food or $5.00 for children under 12. All proceeds from the event will go towards helping support Park City families through the Holy Cross Ministries and St. Mary’s Foodbank. This even is not just a fun way to swing into spring, but it’s also a great way to show some support and help out a good cause.

May 19^th – Education is a wonderful thing, and this May 19^th you’ll get the opportunity to support the Park City Education Foundation by taking part in a 41 mile relay race through Park City. Registration ends soon so make sure you stop by the website to sign up! If you don’t want to register, this is still a great Park City event for spectators and we highly recommend coming out and cheering for the competitors.

May 25^th – June 3^rd – The Park City Film Music Festival is an independent film festival which showcases film music for both indie and sponsored films. This will be the 9^th year that the event is held and it is sure to be another success! Tickets went on sale April 15^th so make sure you take a look to decide which events you want to attend before they sell out!

May 30^th – October 17^th – The Annual Park City Farmer’s Market returns this May at Canyon’s Resort. The market takes place every Wednesday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm from May until October, and offers a great selection of local produce, baked goods, arts and crafts. This is one of the best annual Park City events and is a sure to please any visitors coming to town in May.
